Strachur Smiddy and Craft Shop opens

Location:

Strachur Smiddy Museum and Craft Shop open on for this year’s summer season from Saturday 25th May. The craft shop has new items year in addition to the regular crafts: genuine horseshoes: plain and painted, a selection of beautiful pottery pieces, handmade baskets, essential-oil soaps, local honey & jam, Smiddy dumplings freshly made each weekend from a traditional recipe and of course our blacksmith’s crafted pokers & toasting forks.

John, our local blacksmith is very much the star of the show as each weekend he demonstrates his craft to visitors whilst answering all their questions and inviting them to help out at the giant bellows. Both young and old are always happy to have a go!

In addition to John’s weekend demonstrations, last year he ran Experience Days for local folks who wanted some one-to-one training to be able to make their own fire pokers.

We are also very lucky to have Janey, who assists John at the weekends with making the pokers and toasting forks that are sold in the adjoining craft shop, and of course we are indebted to our wonderful volunteers without whom we couldn’t run the museum and shop.
